Question

1. Is vRD 2008 supported for running on Windows Vista SP1?

  • Yes, for details please have look at the installation guide.

Question

2. Does vRD 2008 supports Remote Desktop Protocol 6.1 and the switch "admin" to connect to a console session of a remote computer?

  • With vRD you have the possibility to use RDP versions 5.x, 6.0 and 6.1.
  • With all these versions you are able to connect to the console of a server.

Question

3. Can we use vRD 2008 on Terminal Server?

  • Yes, you can install vRD 2008 on a Terminal Server and use it remotely.

Question

4. What about the licenses, when running vRD 2008 on Terminal Server?

  • At least only the number of named admins is essential for licensing, no matter how many administrators are working simultaneously. Means we do not offer concurrent licenses.

Question

5. When running vRD 2008 in database mode, does each administrator see each object?

  • No, only the connection objects are visible for everybody and thus may be used by everyone. When creating a credential you have to choose, whether it is public and may be used by other persons as well or whether it is private and only can be used by the creator himself.
  • For details please also have a look at the online help of visionapp Remote Desktop 2008.

Question

6. Do I have the possibility to track actions of administrators for auditing purposes?

  • In vRD 2008 the recently established connections will be stored in connection history. Furthermore in database mode log files are available. Here activities and errors are reported.

Question

7.What do I have to do to switch off the feature, that the sessions of connected users will be displayed?

  • Go to Tools -> Options -> Remote Desktop | Polling Interval to discover the session information and set this value to "Never".
  • Now for all connections no session information of users will be displayed anymore. But you still have the ability to get this information manually: Right click on a connection and choose "Refresh Sessions".
  • The plan for next version is to have this feature also on folder level.

Question

8. Am I able to use my objects of vRD 1.5 with vRD 2008?

  • To do so you have to backup your settings in vRD 1.5 and restore it in vRD 2008.
  • An export file of vRD 1.5 cannot be used with vRD 2008.

Question

9. Does the test version offer the whole functionality of the licensed product (except it only runs 30 days)?

  • The only limitation is, that you are not able to export or backup settings.

Question

10. Can I configure the port, when connecting vRD 2008 to a database server?

  • In the database connection wizard fill in the name for the database server followed by the port, e.g. "databaseserver,1234".

Question

11. Is it possible with vRD 2008 to connect to remote computer via VPN?

  • No, at the time being vRD 2008 only supports RDP connections. If you like to access a remote server via VPN, you have to use an according tool.
  • Within this VPN connection now you have the possibility to use vRD 2008 for administering remote computers, provided that you fulfill the requirements (see also at the vRD 2008 installation guide).
  • The plan is to include further protocols like ICA or VNC.

Question

12. How can I transfer the connections created in the Technical Preview to the final release?

  • First you need a valid license key which you have to import into the Technical Preview: Go to ? -> Info... within the menu, press "Import new license file" and browse to your vRD 2008 license file.
  • After that you'll be able to export your connections at Object -> Export.
  • Now you can uninstall the Technical Preview, install the final release of vRD 2008 and import the same valid license key into it.
  • After importing the license key you can use the import function at Objects -> Import within your new installation of vRD 2008.
  • Finally, all the connections already created within the Technical Preview are ready for usage in your new installation of vRD 2008.

Question

13. I have installed vRD 2008 on Windows Vista and have problems using the database mode. How do I establish the database connection successfully?

  • Administrative rights are mandatory to connect vRD 2008 to a database. However, in Windows Vista applications will be started with non-administrative rights by default, even you are logged in as an administrator. Please start vRD 2008 with the option "Run as" with an administrator account and try to connect to the database again.

Question

14. Is it possible to connect to computer, on which Network Layer Authentication (NLA) is active?

  • At the time being is not possible to do so. But with the next version vRD 2008 R2 it will be possible to connect to a computer with active NLA.

Question

15. When installing vRD on Windows Vista I do always get an error “Internal Error 2738”. What can I do?

  • This error is caused by an incorrect registration of the file VBScript.dll by Vista itself. Please register the file manually: "regsvr32 vbscript.dll"

Question

16. When trying to connect to a remote computer via vRD an error appears. What might be the reason?

  • The reason might be an incorrect registration of the file mstscax.dll by the operating system itself. Please register the file manually: "regsvr32 mstscax.dll".

Question

17. Trying to connect to establish a connection using display settings of 1900 x 1200 always ends up in an error. What is the cause for that?

  • This error is caused by an older version of the RDP Client, which does not support this settings. Please update the RDP Client or install visionapp Remote Desktop 2008 Service Pack 1.

Question 18

18. How to deploy vRD automatically as a silent/unattended package?

  • Step 1: Start vRD2008.exe manually and chose your preferred language in the first dialog and wait until the progress bar is done.
  • Step 2: Go to your %TEMP% folder . There you will find now a file with a temporary name and the extension .MSI (e.g. 3975e7.msi) . Copy this file to another location and rename it to vRD2008.msi
  • Step 3: Now you can run the .MSI setup directly and silent inside your software deployment/ packaging environment. The silent installation of the MSI setup can started with the following command line: “MSIEXEC /I vRD2008.msi /qb”

Question 19

19. How to deploy the vRD license file automatically to multiple users?

  • Step 1: Import the license file for the first user manually inside vRD (? -> Info -> Import new license file)
  • Step 2: Start REGEDIT.EXE and export the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\visionapp\vRD2008\CoreLicense” registry key
  • Step 3: Use your software deployment/packaging system or a login script or something similar to import the exported registry key to each user
  • Hint: This steps are not necessary in the “database” mode because in this mode the license file is globally stored in the database for all users
