Cloud computing needs security
Edition, November 2011
This summer, the market researchers from IDC surveyed 202 companies with more than 100 employees about their situation and plans related to IT security in the data center. The conclusion: Enterprise IT and its threat scenarios keep on growing in complexity. Although new trends like cloud computing, mobility and social media offer many advantages, they do also make CIOs hot and bothered.
Security can take many forms in the cloud computing paradigm: For example, in the case of security-as-a-service, we find a relatively new form of delivery. It allows users to respond very quickly to change requirements, for example in relation to signatures, files, updates or code fixes. They can keep the costs for providing and using the service low and transparent, and manage documentation of the results centrally.
Use of cloud services also opens up new opportunities for delivering and obtaining services securely, regardless of whether the scenario involves a public, private or hybrid cloud. A wide range of activities are required to avoid or repel risks and achieve greater data security. For example, 54 percent of the surveyed companies optimize their internal IT security before using a cloud and 41 percent conduct security assessments of their internal IT.
In our view, IT security remains one of the key cornerstones of your IT activities – whether you have ambitions to use cloud computing or not. What is vital is a well thought-out strategy. A high level of security can be achieved only if individual security solutions are combined into a single approach. Our newsletter today should help you in reaching your target.

Glossary
Security on Demand is a delivery model in which users only source security functions from the cloud, for example, to safeguard their internal IT environment. Firewalls, the latest virus definitions for intrusion detection and other security mechanisms can then be maintained and updated by a third-party service provider. The security functions are delivered constantly via the Internet. Find more glossary topics here...

How to ensure security in hybrid and public cloud models
You know how to protect a data center. Firewalls and intrusion detection are second nature to you. But protecting data in the cloud, or to be more precise in hybrid and public cloud models, is new ground for you. In our today´s edition of Cloud News we are discussing measures to reduce risks in migrating to the cloud.
Did you know?
In the early infancy of the (personal) computer, the term computer security was used to denote the correct functioning of hardware (failure of tape drives or other mechanical components, for example) and software (correct installation and maintenance of programs). Over time the demands made of computers changed.
